Modern stadiums are increasingly complex environments. Enclosed roofs, larger stands and multi-use schedules reduce access to natural light, while expectations for pitch quality remain extremely high. As a result, maintaining consistent natural grass conditions has become more challenging for grounds teams worldwide.
Moving towards controlled turf environments
To address these challenges, stadium operators are shifting toward more controlled and technology-supported turf management approaches. Developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich, Rhenac’s CLS® (Complete Light Spectrum®) technology supports natural and hybrid grass by adapting light spectrum and intensity to plant requirements and environmental conditions.
This enables a more precise, condition-based approach to pitch maintenance rather than relying on fixed lighting schedules.
Flexible applications across stadiums
CLS® is available in mobile systems as well as fully integrated stadium solutions, from targeted pitch treatment to complete field coverage. The system is already in use in leading venues such as the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, VELTINS Arena, and Leigh Sports Village.
Recognised innovation in sports infrastructure
The technology has been awarded two “Winner” distinctions at the German Innovation Awards 2026 in the categories Circular Impacts and Lighting Solutions, and was also shortlisted for the Smarter Sports Awards 2026 in Smarter Venue & Infrastructure Innovation.
More precise and data-driven turf management
As stadium operations evolve, turf care is becoming increasingly data-informed and responsive. By aligning light delivery with plant needs, CLS® helps support consistent pitch quality while improving efficiency in energy and resource use—contributing to more sustainable and reliable stadium operations.
